What is an Index?
An index (i.e. Super Pages, Yahoo) is a database of web sites. Your listing in an index depends on what you tell them in your submission, not what is on your page. Some sites are mixtures; Yahoo has both a search engine and an index, for example.

What is a search engine?
A Search Engine(i.e.Google,Yahoo) is a database of websites. Listing your website with the major search engines helps people locate you on the Internet.  Some Search Engines offer advertising plans to optimize your location in there database.

What is a Directory?
A Directory (i.e. Kudzu) is a website that is dedicated to listing businesses by area and category.  The are paying the Search Engines for advertising to ensure they come up first.  If you are listed, potential customers will be able to find you there.

How do I benefit from the listings?
These companies are already paying for big advertising to promote your area.  Why not piggy back off of that advertising.  If Kudzu and City Search are coming up in the search bars as number 1, you would have to pay a competitive price to beat there location.  Listing with them will broaden your exposure on the Internet without going broke.  Listing your website address with the Search Engines helps them know you exist so they can add you to their database.  Your website is useless if no one knows that it is there.

What is a link exchange?  ( LinkExchange 101 )

Basically a Link Exchange is a method of linking from the information on one website to another website.  Some of the largest search engines rank your page by seeing how many links you have.  The more links you have, the better.

There are 4 different types of links:

  • URL Link - This is simply a website url that is a link.

  • Text Links (aka static links) - This is the most common type of link (when you click on a word or phrase and it is a link)

  • Image Links - An image link is simply an image that you click on to navigate to another webpage.

  • Dynamic Links - These types of links are in another programming language called Javascript and while they also take you from one webpage to another, they have 'extra codes' to perform special functions.

When creating a Link Exchange, there are 2 types of links that you can get:

  • One-way links - A one-way link is when another website links to you and you don't link back to them.

  • Reciprocal links - A reciprocal link is when a website links to you and you link back to them.
