How to Write a Press Release

You now know a press release is a valueable tool, but how do you use it.  Press releases are written and prepared for distribution to the news media announcing something  or claiming to have news value with the intent of gaining media coverage and exposure.

A press release consists of following sections:

Headline: The headline is the first single line of text in the press release and tells what the press release is about. It can be a very effective tool to grab the attention of the journalists, so writing it from a journalists perspective is very important. Use a catchy hadline to attract attention.

Summary: The summary let's your build up your chance to sell your press release to the journalist. It is generally a requirement of online press release services and it can be of the size of a small paragraph and generall less that 250 words

Press Release Body:

Introduction - This is where the press release body starts. It is the first paragraph and generally gives basic answers to the questions of who, what, when, where and why.

Body - The body comes after the introduction and gives further explanation, statistics, background and/or other details related to the news.

Keywords: This is an area offered where you can list keywords and phrases a person would use to search for your release.

Categories: This area is where you can narrow down the location of your press release.  This ensures the right people will view your release.

Company Profile: The about section is used over and over again. It is generally a short section providing background information on the press release issuing company, organization or individual.

Contact Info: This section contains the name, phone number, email address, mailing address, or other contact information for the contact person.

BOOST YOUR

INTERNET PRESENCE!

Top 10 MistakesTop 10 Mistakes

1. Using a "Splash Page"

An example would be a home page with a picture and the words "Enter Site".  Your home page should be descriptive to be optimized for Search Engines.

2.  A Brochure Site

If you want to be #1, you need to be the best.  Keep visitors returning by offering more than just your company information.  Reviews, resources and blogs are great ideas.

3. Text as Image

Using images of text makes a site look beautiful to the human eye but confuses the computer.  Avoid putting important or all text in image form to ensure optimization.

4. No Titles or Descriptions in the page tags

A website address translate into this (www.yoursite.com/thepage).  You are missing out on good exposure to keywords affiliated with your business or website.  Make sure you include keywords and phrases in the Page Title/URL Link.

5. Same Title & Description on every page

Again you are missing out on the amount of keyword areas a search engine can "crawl".  You should give each page a unique Title and Description and be descriptive.

6. Redesign site but keep old Title and Descriptions

Give the search engines something new to crawl and make sure that the title and descriptions reference the redesigned site.

7. No Local Keywords

You should use local keywords.  It is how people narrow their search, so get on board.

8. Company "Branding" in Title

If you are a new website or business, no one knows you exist so they are not looking for you. Use words that people will be searching for.

9.  Using Hidden Text, Cloaking and False Doorways

Don't try to fool the search engine, it can get you banned.  Instead construct your pages correctly.

10. Bad Linking Choices

Do not link with companies who have bad reputations like spam type sites.  Search engines frown on this.  Research potential linking neighbors to ensure their quality.
